Operant conditioning was defined and studied by behavioral psychologist B.F. Skinner. Operant conditioning (OC), also called instrumental conditioning, describes the process of learning by making associations between particular behaviors and consequences. OC was first described by psychologist Burrhus Frederic (B.F.) Skinner in the 1930 and ’40s. He is now considered the “father of operant conditioning.” Operant conditioning is a type of associative learning which focuses on consequences that follow a response or behavior that we make and whether the consequences make a behavior more or less likely to occur. 6.2. In operant conditioning, organisms learn to associate a behavior and its consequence ([link]).

Operant conditioning

Through operant conditioning, an individual makes an association between a particular behavior and a consequence. 2020-02-20 Operant behavior is behavior "controlled" by its consequences.

In operant conditioning, organisms learn to associate a behavior and its consequence ([link]). A pleasant consequence makes that behavior more likely to be repeated in the future. For example, Spirit, a dolphin at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, does a flip in the air when her trainer blows a whistle. The consequence is that she gets a fish. Operant conditioning is a theory of learning in behavioral psychology which emphasises the role of reinforcement in conditioning. It emphasises the effect that rewards and punishments for specific behaviors can have on a person’s future actions. Operant conditioning is all about the consequences of a behavior—a behavior changes in relation to the environment.
